Lockdown

Hello Chilton Families,

Tuesday we practiced our lockdown drill. A lockdown is called when there is a threat or hazard inside the school campus. The language used is “lockdown, locks, lights, out of sight.” The action requires ensuring doors are locked, moving students and staff out of the line of sight from windows, turning off all lights, and remaining quiet.

We practice drills to help build muscle memory in the event of a true emergency, and we practice in order for our school to identify gaps and areas of improvement.

For more information about our safety procedures, please check out the safety information on our district website.

Thank you,

Jeff Ancker

Visitor and Volunteer Reminders

We appreciate our many visitors and volunteers throughout the school year. Please read these quick reminders for taking photos and/or videos of students on any RCSD campus or during any RCSD activity.

  • We want to remind all visitors and volunteers that some of our students are exempt from having their photo or information shared publicly. For student privacy purposes, please only photograph and/or video your own student(s) when on campus, while attending a class field trip, etc.
  • Please do not share photos of any student besides your own on online platforms. If others are in the photo, please crop or blur/hide their faces.
  • For safety purposes, also do not share room numbers or school site maps on online platforms
  • Photos of students during events which are open to the community (after school hours festivals, sporting events, performances, etc.) are allowed. All attendees of these community events should be aware that photos and/or videos may be shared on online platforms.

Please contact me if you have questions or concerns. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students and staff safe.

STOPit: Anonymous Reporting Tool

Yesterday, we sent a SWIFT message with a letter about the latest support available in our district - STOPit, an anonymous online reporting tool. If you have not had a chance to read through the letter, please take a few moments to review the same letter attached below.

Chilton STOPit Letter

STOPit can be accessed on our web page by clicking the purple STOPit button.

Positive Behavior - The Bobcat Way!

Chilton's fabulous PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support team) put together slides to teach students about positive behavior expectations at school. Our teachers went over these positive behavior expectations last week in your student's classrooms, and we would love your support in promoting these positive behaviors at school! Here is a link to a shortened version of the slides your student saw throughout the week to reference.

Counseling Update

In an effort to achieve this goal, school staff or parents/guardians may refer students for counseling, or students may request counseling. These services are available at no cost. RCSD school counselors offer short‐term individual counseling to students, as well as small group counseling.

If you would like more information about counseling services available on our site, please contact your student's school counselor.

iReady Diagnostics

RCSD's iReady diagnostic assessment window at Chilton continues this week! Your student will begin completing their iReady diagnostics based on the calendar below.
**For Math, 6th grade already completed their iReady diagnostic.
Some ways that you can support your student's demonstration of where they are currently in math and reading are as follows:
  • Remind your student to have their phones and electronic devices on silent and zipped in their backpacks
  • Make sure their Chromebook is charged and they bring headphones
  • Remind your student to take their time, review answers, and do their best
  • Make sure your student brings a book or colored pencils to silently read or draw if they finish their diagnostic early.

Community Happenings and Resources

Please take a few moments to look through the different events happening throughout our community and the resources that are available to community members.

The Chilton PTC is looking for new members! See the attached flyer for more details.

Job Opportunity!

Chilton families! We have an opportunity to support our school community, and make a positive impact on the lives of our students and staff.

We currently still have one open position for Meal Duty Supervisors at our school, and we would like to extend this invitation to all parents/guardians, family members, or neighbors you may know who might be interested in contributing to the safety and welfare of our students during mealtime activities. Becoming a Meal Duty Supervisor not only fosters a safe environment for our students, but also allows you to supplement your income by dedicating just an hour or two each day.

If you are interested in applying for the Meal Duty Supervisor position, please do so through Edjoin using the following link: https://www.edjoin.org/Home/DistrictJobPosting/1811212. Should you have any questions or require further information about the role or application process, please do not hesitate to reach out to our principal Jeff Ancker.

Library Info

Our wonderful librarian, along with help from our counseling team, our library aides, and our Social Studies teachers, finished checking out textbooks and Chromebooks to ALL of our students at Chilton! As a reminder for your student's checked out items, please read the below information carefully.

  • WRITE YOUR NAME AND THE DATE IN INK in the space provided inside the front cover of the Social Studies textbook. Although all textbooks are tracked by barcode, not name, this will help the student keep track of his/her textbooks.
  • SHOW YOUR TEACHER/LIBRARIAN ANY DAMAGE to your textbook/Chromebook or library books before it is checked out to you.  Please have your teacher report any damage immediately so it may be entered into our library system.  FAILURE TO DO THIS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR MAY RESULT IN A CHARGE FOR DAMAGE TO THE TEXTBOOK AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.
  • DO NOT LOAN YOUR TEXTBOOKS/CHROMEBOOKS/LIBRARY BOOKS/ OR CHARGERS TO OTHER STUDENTS.  Students are responsible for the care and return of all textbooks/Chromebooks/Library books and chargers checked out to them during the school year, whether left in the classroom or taken home.  REMEMBER, all the above mentioned items ARE TRACKED BY THE BARCODE, NOT A NAME ON THE ITEM. Returning a textbook checked out to another student will NOT clear your name.
  • PLACE ALL LIBRARY BOOKS in a gallon size Ziplock bag.  Carrying books to and from school in your backpack may result in damage to the book. Including water damage from leaking water bottles, or rainy days.  DO NOT USE tape or other sticky substances directly on library books/Chromebooks/ or textbooks.  It will result in damage to the book when removed.
Lost or Damaged Materials including: Textbooks, Chromebooks, Library books, and Chargers
  • ALL LOST OR DAMAGED MATERIALS MUST BE PAID FOR.  Please remember that your teachers are not responsible for your materials, even if they have been kept in the classroom.  We do not accept replacement books for lost/damaged textbooks. All textbooks and library books purchased for our school are LIBRARY BOUND. This is a special binding that allows the books to be used for many years. AMAZON replacements will not be accepted.
  • BILLS WILL BE MAILED HOME at the end of the school year for all missing textbooks, as well as those that are returned damaged.  Please make checks for textbooks payable to Chilton Middle School
  • UNPAID FINES will remain on your student’s account until all books are returned or fines are paid in full.  In addition, students with outstanding fines will not receive their  yearbooks at the end of the year, and may not be allowed to participate in year end activities.

PLEASE CONTACT THE CHILTON LIBRARIAN FOR REPLACEMENT COST OF EACH INDIVIDUAL ITEM.

We encourage all families to purchase a Chromebook cover to help protect the Chromebook from any scratches or damage. To know which cover to buy, you can flip over the Chromebook and read the model number on the underside of the Chromebook. An example is shown below. You are looking for where it says "HP Chromebook __ __."

Cultural Fun Fact

In 1973, the U.S. Congress designated August 26th as Women's Equality Day to commemorate the passage of the 19th Amendment on August 26th, 1920 giving women the right to vote. The commemoration came as a result of nationwide strikes for women's equality in the early 1970s. Beginning when Richard Nixon made the first proclamation in 1973, every president has issued a proclamation in commemoration each year designating August 26th as Women's Equality Day.

Most recently, President Joe Biden issued the following proclamation on August 26th, 2022.

"NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim August 26, 2022, as Women’s Equality Day.  I call upon the people of the United States to celebrate and continue to build on our country’s progress towards gender equality, and to defend and strengthen the right to vote."

Chilton Core Values

Chilton's August Core Value is RESPECT

At Chilton:

We believe respectful behavior means showing courtesy, admiration or thoughtfulness to someone or to something. When we practice treating others with respect, we will receive respect in return. Respect means understanding and behaving as if we are all unique, capable and valuable.

Talk with your child about what RESPECT means to your family!

Student Parent Handbook 2023-2024

Here is the 2023-24 Student-Parent Handbook. Please read this over with your student(s) to learn the policies and procedures for Chilton Middle School. Each student will receive a hard copy of the handbook with a daily planner built in for students to use to write down important dates and to stay organized with their classwork.

Attendance

Attendance is vital for every child every day as lifelong habits are established in the early school years and contribute to student success throughout their school career and beyond. The best way to keep up with your student's curriculum pacing is to ensure they are in class daily and engaging with peers and their teachers.

Please be reminded that our upcoming vacation days for Trimester 1 are:

  • Monday, September 4th (Labor Day)
  • Monday and Tuesday, October 30-31 (Teacher Workday/No Students)

Please try and schedule appointments on non-school days and after school. If your child will be absent for an extended period, please visit our district website or contact the school's front office to set up a short-term independent study contract.

Reporting Absences

There are many ways to report your student's absence and it is important that you report it to us as soon as possible. We wanted to highlight the different options:

Deliveries, Food Drop-offs, and Messages to Students

Parents are NOT PERMITTED to bring in or drop off any food or drink (including water bottles). This includes food delivery services. Lunches are offered for free, so any forgotten lunch can be supplemented by cafeteria offerings. We also have multiple water fountains in classrooms and around campus for students to use.

Items delivered or left in the office by parents will not be delivered to students. Students will not be notified of items in the office and it is the responsibility of the student to come to the office during lunch or passing periods to pick up items. We will only deliver emergency messages to students.

Traffic Reminders

  • Please follow all traffic and parking laws.
  • Please do not park in front of other's driveways, garages, or designated no parking areas around the campus (including the bus loop) and surrounding neighborhood.
  • Please make sure to obey instructions from the Crossing Guards (California Vehicle Code 2815).

Please no parking in the middle of the parking lot. This causes traffic back ups and doesn't allow others to pull out of their parking spots safely and efficiently.

Please make sure to safely pull forward as far as you can to keep traffic moving.

Have your student meet you at your car further down the line rather than at the beginning of the parking lot. This will allow traffic to flow more efficiently. Please use these two lanes only to drop off and pick students up.
